Join the Northern Thailand route, offering the most unique driving experiences available, over 12 driving days. This tour offers some of the most scenic and famous roads in the world, including the famous Mae Hong Son Loop, the Golden Triangle, the Boklua Loop and the routes around Nan, especially the famous R1148, which has been recognized as one of the top ten driving roads in the world.
Throughout this adventure, you will have the opportunity to visit Thailand’s highest mountain, Doi Inthanon, explore the fascinating “Long-Neck” tribes and admire the lush tea plantations in the mountains of Doi Mae Salong. In addition, you will experience the historic Sukhothai Historical Park and the remarkable “Golden Triangle”, where the borders of Laos, Myanmar and Thailand meet.
The journey also includes breathtaking views of the Mekong River, the majestic mountains of Phu Chi Fha and Phu Tubberk, many other extraordinary sights and of course a beautiful temple or two. Day 1. Arrival in Chiang Mai
We will meet at your hotel in Chiang Mai for check-in at 2:00 PM upon arrival in Chiang Mai. Here you will receive a short tour briefing and then we will collect the bikes from the rental company. You will enjoy one night at a comfortable local hotel in Chiang Mai before the ride begins. During the evening there you will have the opportunity to choose from a number of excellent restaurants and bars within walking distance of your accommodation, so you can experience the vibrant local nightlife and culinary scene. We will also set up a communal dinner for those who wish.
Day 2. Chiang Mai – Mae Sariang (via Doi Inthanon) (260 km)
We start the tour at 08:00, departing from Chiang Mai via the highway. The tour will then continue to the scenic mountain roads that lead up to Doi Inthanon. Along the way, we will stop at the stunning Wachirathan Waterfall before reaching Thailand’s highest peak at 2565 meters above sea level. On the way back, there will be an opportunity to visit the venerable King and Queen’s temples, which provide a special cultural experience. After this, we drive on winding mountain roads towards the charming small town of Mae Sariang, where we will spend the night at a riverside hotel, which provides a peaceful and picturesque place to stay. Of course, we will eat local specialties for dinner and relax in the warmth.
Day 3. Mae Sariang - Pai
We start the day by riding the famous Mae Hong Son Loop with more than 2000 bends and on beautiful mountain roads all the way up to Khon Yuam, where you will see the war museum and take a coffee break. After Khun Yuam, more mountain roads and stops at various viewpoints before reaching the small town of Mae Hong Son. Visit the famous Long Neck tribes before riding up to the temple on the mountain to see the view of the town, and then have lunch at a local restaurant.
Then we ride the last winding roads to the small hippie town of Pai. A small tourist town between the mountains with a nice night market, a walking street with many bars and restaurants and a vibrant nightlife. Overnight at a hotel near the famous walking street in Pai.
Day 4. Pai – Doi Ankhang (209 km)
We start the day as usual at 08:00 and drive down from Pai’s winding roads and north to visit the fascinating Chiang Dao Cave. After exploring the cave, enjoy a delicious lunch near the famous Chiang Dao Temple, and immerse yourself in the local cultural and spiritual atmosphere. We then drive up to Doi Ankhang mountain, where we spend the night in a beautiful location with gorgeous views of the valley below.
Day 5: Doi Ankhang - Chiang Rai (316 km)
Today we drive back to the main road and follow it north to the flower paradise of Doi Mae Salong. From there we continue along scenic country roads until we reach the highway, which we take south to visit the exciting Baan-Dam, also known as the Black House Temple with a somewhat morbid theme to be a temple. We then drive to the city of Chiang Rai, where you will have the opportunity to visit the famous White Temple. The day ends with an overnight stay at a comfortable hotel in the city where we have a lovely dinner and a visit to the popular clock tower which offers a small show every hour, as well as visits to some bars nearby for those who wish.
Day 6. Chiang Rai – Chiang Kong (163 km)
Today is a slightly shorter ride, but there is a lot to see. The first stop will be the famous Tam Luang cave where the 13 football players were trapped for 14 days, and the whole world followed the successful rescue mission. Then we stop at Thailand’s northernmost point, the border with Mae Sai, where we also have lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch we drive along the inland roads of the Golden Triangle, where the three countries of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos meet. On a clear day we can actually see China from here too. We then drive along the famous Paradise Road and end up in the small and cozy town of Chiang Kong on the Mekong River. We stay at a local hotel on the riverbank and have dinner in the small cozy main street of the town.
Day 7. Chiang Kong - Nan (288 km)
Today you will drive one of the world’s top 10 motorcycle roads, the famous R1148, which passes through the mountains of Phu Chi Fah. We will also drive a short loop to the top. Most of the day will be spent stopping at viewpoints and having lunch at a local restaurant. Before arriving at the hotel in the city of Nan, we will stop at a temple overlooking the city. We will spend the night at a nice hotel in the city.
Day 8. Nan – Boklua Loop (322 km)
Today you can relax by the pool and take a day off, or you can join the optional drive to Boklua, which is one of the most amazing roads to ride in this area.
From Nan we drive the famous Boklua Loop and visit the tourist attraction on Highway 3, where the road is shaped like the number 3. Then we stop at the Boklua Salt Mine, where they make salt in an 800-year-old salt mine. We then drive over the mountain and stop at various viewpoints before having lunch at a local restaurant and then returning to Nan for a dip in the pool.
Day 9. Nan - Nam Phat (175 km)
Today we will explore the scenic rural roads from Nan, crossing the picturesque Sirikit Lake by small barge ferry. Afterwards we will continue to the charming town of Nam Phat, where we will stay overnight at a cozy little resort and enjoy the peaceful surroundings and local hospitality.
Day 10. Nam Phat – Loei
Today we will experience some of the most famous national parks in Northern Thailand. Our route will take us through the Phu Suan Sai, Phu Hua Hom and Phu Ruea national parks. Remarkably, we will have the unique opportunity to enjoy coffee in Laos without crossing the border control. The day also includes a visit to a so-called “skywalk” and various other attractions. Our journey ends in the town of Loei, where we visit our friends at the local Saloon Bar. We spend the night in a pleasant resort within walking distance, providing a comfortable and relaxing end to the day’s adventure.
Day 11: Loei - Phu Tubberk (188 km)
We leave Loei and ride along the main roads until we begin the exciting, steep climb to the summit of Phu Tubberk. This area offers some of the most stunning views in Thailand, and it is also one of the few places in the country where the temperature can be quite chilly. At night we will stay in unique igloo tents, providing an adventurous experience like no other. Rest assured that the accommodation offers a level of comfort and luxury that we all deserve, ensuring a memorable and enjoyable stay.
Day 12: Phu Tubberk – Sukhothai (221 km)
We ride through the stunning Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park, stopping along the way to enjoy the scenic views. The journey then takes us to Sukhothai, Thailand’s ancient capital. Upon arrival, we visit Sukhothai Historical Park, known for its well-preserved ruins and historical significance. After exploring the site, we check into a comfortable hotel to relax and prepare for the next day’s adventure.
Day 13: Sukhothai – Chiang Mai
On our final riding day, as we travel from Sukhothai back to Chiang Mai, we visit several attractions along the way. A highlight will be Thailand’s highest train station in Lampang.
The trip ends when we return to Chiang Mai in the afternoon, but whether you wish to stay a day or so, there will always be time to celebrate the successful completion of the journey with a special dinner at a local restaurant in Chiang Mai, marking the end of a memorable adventure.
Day 13: Sukhothai – Chiang Mai
